Charlemagne Homes

The History of Charlemagne

Charlemagne was built in the late 1960’s by the renowned Kennedy Builders. The following is an excerpt from their original brochure:

Inspired by ideals of gracious living smoothly translated from the French, Charlemagne is a very special new community dedicated entirely to fine homes.

They are homes in traditional styles, in good taste, on lots that average one-third to one-half acre. And they are homes distinguished by their spaciousness. Rooms are airy and light. Plenty of windows let cheerfulness in, and let you see out. All the up-to-date interior arrangements are planned in generous and practical dimensions.

Your preference might be for a style that suggests the south of France. Or for one derived from a hospitable country house in Normandy. Or perhaps the design that hints of new-world France, in New Orleans.

On the other hand, you might choose the look of a gracious English country house. Maybe it is a home with the air of an Italian palazzo that appeals to you… or the echo of fiesta in the exterior design of a Spanish hacienda …or the timeless American Colonial of the Atlantic seaboard.

Whatever your choice, there is something satisfying and reassuring about it, as you may already have discovered. For the Kennedy building program in Charlemagne makes it possible that your new home be exactly the home you want, in every detail.

You may have any change you wish in the arrangement of a Kennedy-built home. The revised plans, incorporating your personal decisions, will be submitted promptly along with whatever changes in price, if any, are entailed.

We believe you will be happy to have your new home built in the village of Northbrook. This desirable residential North Shore community is only 20 miles from downtown Chicago – neither too close to the city nor too distant from it. Northbrook is also easily convenient to the shore of Lake Michigan, to O’Hare International Airport, to the lakes region of northern Illinois, and to the Wisconsin holiday country.

Expressways and tollways running north, northwest, and south are within short driving distance of Charlemagne.

Two railways provide fast, air-conditioned commuter service to downtown Chicago, The Milwaukee Road through the village and the Chicago & North Western to the east (Glencoe station). Both stations are only a few minutes drive from Charlemagne.

There are many country clubs and golf courses in the Northbrook area. Sportsman Country Club, for one, is just across Dundee Road from the entrance to Charlemagne. Two country Forest Preserves follow along the river through the village. Facilities for sailing, riding, hiking, swimming, picnicking, ice-skating are close and convenient. An outstanding Park District, which includes a Youth Center, offers play and sport activities for children of all ages, and recreation for adults too. Organized children’s programs, summer and winter both, are directed by trained supervisors. And for adults who wish to see advantage of semi-private recreational facilities, there are in addition to the golf clubs in the Northbrook area others that provide for tennis, trapshooting, skeet, curling, and swimming. There is activity for everyone in the family who wants it.

Northbrook is also desirable for its fine schools, including Glenbrook North High School at 2300 Shermer Road.

In Charlemagne, you can be confident of living in a happy North Shore community in a fine home that is gracious and convenient, hospitable and comfortable, impressive and livable.
